Bringing this week to a close is the latest far-reaching Globalwize broadcast by WeltBeat host and selector Jean Trouillet. Originally aired on Frankfurt community radio X, this episode is an 'African Presence' takeover, including special studio guests Manga Diagne and Wellid from the forthcoming Afrikanisches Kulturfest set to take place in Frankfurt from June 30th - July 2nd. That being said, here's a quick rundown of what to expect:
The "Globalwize Radioshow #423" kicks off with exceptional Moroccan oud player Driss El Maloumi, the rebellious "Amazigh Freedom Rock (1973-1983)" of pioneering Algerian Berber band Les Abranis and the Middle Eastern psych-rock collective Al-Qasar with their explosive mix of heavy Arabian grooves, global psychedelia and North African trance music. Next up is Nottingham-based Senegalese composer and kora player Seckou Keita presenting his "African Rhapsodies" alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra, followed by the astounding collaborative project of Iranian kamancheh player Kayhan Kalhor and Malian kora virtuoso Toumani Diabaté and the equally gorgeous new album by France-based Guinean songwriter, kora player and guitarist Djeli Moussa Condé. After that, we hear an extraordinary collaboration by Senegalese legend Youssou N'Dour and the late Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, before we venture into the genre-defying Afrofuturist manifesto of Ugandan producer, dancer and choreographer Faizal Mostrixx. Enter Kenyan Afropop band Sauti Sol, paving the way to contemporary Ghanaian Frafra gospel outfit Alogte Oho & His Sounds of Joy as well as Ghanaian shamanic performer and restless sonic experimenter King Ayisoba. As we near the end of the show, we hear Jamaican singer Etana's 2011-released conscious reggae track "People Talk", fellow Jamaican reggae and dancehall legend Johnny Osbourne joining the Inna De Yard crew and, in closing, the cosmic vibes of the Sun Ra Arkestra directed by Marshall Allen.
