Globalwize Radioshow #414

09/12/2022Weltbeat Host/Selector Jean Trouillet Airs A "Strictly Dubwize" Special W/ Helmut Philipps

It's no secret that WeltBeat host and selector Jean Trouillet is not just a veritable music head, but also a true reggae aficionado. So it may not come as a surprise that the latest instalment of his far-reaching Globalwize format on Frankfurt community radio X is a "DubWize Special" and thus entirely dedicated to the dub genre. Joining him in the studio is non other than German author, journalist, sound engineer, producer and keynote speaker Helmut Philipps. Philipps just published his new book "Dub Konferenz – 50 Jahre Dub aus Jamaika" ('Dub Conference – 50 Years of Dub from Jamaica') via Strzelecki Books, which provided the initial incentive and foundation for the two-hour show.

Opening with The Orb's "Towers of Dub" in a Mad Professor remix, this edition of Globalwize takes listeners on an in-depth exploration of dub music that goes even further back in time to retrace the roots (no pun intended) of this groundbreaking sound. For his book, Philipps quite literally embarked on an extensive journey into dub, interviewing veteran musicians, pioneering engineers and inventors of the genre over the course of sixteen years to challenge existing myths and urban legends en route to composing a detailed biography of a recording technique, that went on to revolutionise not just the way music was engineered, but also consumed. As a result, his book might very well be the new standard for anyone looking to or claiming to know a thing or two about dub or wanting to rethink their own listening habits.

Though presented in German, the show's playlist itself is a worth your time, including an expert selection of 15 tunes by some of the greatest to ever 'dub' it, such as Augustus Pablo, King Tubby, Lee "Scratch" Perry & The Upsetters, Bunny Lee & The Aggrovators, Freddie Mc Gregor, Inner Circle & Fatman Riddim Section, Robert French, Tommy McCook and The Victors. You can now stream the full show via Greedio on Mixcloud, playlist included. And as a little extra, if you know German, you can read Jean Trouillet's personal book review of Philipps' "Dub Konferenz" here.
