Globalwize Radioshow #417

17/02/2023Relisten To A New Instalment Of Weltbeat Host/Selector Jean Trouillet's Far-Reaching Format

Prick up your ears because it's time for another brand-new, two-hour instalment of Weltbeat host and selector Jean Trouillet's far-reaching format. Originally aired on Frankfurt's community radio X, this latest Globalwize broadcast is now available to be streamed 'à volonté' in our Greedio Mixcloud channel. But before you hit play, here's a quick rundown of what to expect.

The "Globalwize Radioshow #417" opens on some extraordinary Scottish bagpipe sounds by Breton artist Erwan Keravec, which is followed by the global pop folk of Belgian outfit DUPLEX and then Austrian 'godfather of crazyness' Stefan Sterzinger's tribute to fellow Viennese poet Elfriede Gerstl, who would have turned 90 last year. From there, we head to Franco-Algerian collective Acid Arab and a track off their new album "Trois",  featuring Khnafer Lazhar, which paves the way to new music by Moroccan multi-instrumentalist Majid Bekkas and then the indignantly gorgeous new project by Iranian vocalist Mahsa Vahdat collaborating with Norway's leading choir SKRUK.

We continue with two tracks by "a project inspired by an extensive Kurdish collective memory," aka the Nishtiman Project, and then move on to a wonderful tune by Berlin-based klezmer band Daniel Kahn & the Painted Bird, taken from Yuriy Gurzhy's recent "Richard Wagner & die Klezmerband" compilation. After that, Trouillet plays a selection of Americana tracks released on the Smithsonian Folkways imprint, alternating between the female-led bluegrass band of Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard and the "Radio John: Songs of John Hartford" tribute album presented by Sam Bush. From there, it's back to the classical songbook as countertenor Philippe Jaroussky joins the instrumentalists of L'Arpeggiata led by Christina Pluhar for a colourful album that focuses on the secular French vocal music 'air de cour'.

As we head into the final minutes of the show, we direct our attention to the Brazilian tropicália of João Selva from his new album on Underdog Records, feast on the tropical soul of David Walters from his new album on Heavenly Sweetness and then soak in the "Deaf and Dumb Blues" of Mwezi WaQ., a combo hailing from the Comoro Islands in East Africa. After that, we dive into the 'Berlin Bamako Sessions' of Malian musician Mariam Koné and the Omniversal Earkestra's Oliver Fox, before enjoying a single from the forthcoming album of Trinidad's Calypso Rose feat. Carlos Santana and The Garifuna Collective and, last but not least, closing with Norwegian singer and composer Inger Nordvik's current album title track "Hibernation".
