La Locura De Machuca

19/10/2020Analog Africa Dedicates Latest Release To Visionary Colombian Underground Imprint Discos Machuca

Samy Ben Redjeb's Analog Africa imprint has done it again. After sweltering projects such as Jambú, Mogadisco and a recent tribute to the late and great Ranil, last Friday marked the highly anticipated release of the new "La Locura de Machuca" compilation. Shedding a light on "one man's bizarre odyssey into Colombia's coastal music underground" and the wildly experimental output of his Discos Machuca label from 1975-1980:

"One night in 1975, a successful tax lawyer named Rafael Machuca had his mind blown in Barranquilla’s ‘Plaza de los Musicos’. Overnight he went from a high ranking position in the Colombian revenue authority to visionary production guru of the newly formed record label that bore his name, Discos Machuca, and for the next six years he devoted his life to releasing some of the strangest, most experimental Afro[-Caribbean] Psychedelia, Cumbia and Champeta ever produced."

As such, "La Locura de Machuca (1975-1980)" features an electrifying selection of 17 tunes by "fringe artists" the likes of La Banda Africana, King Somalie, Conjunto Barbacoa, and Abelardo Carbono, "one of the godfathers of Champeta Criolla", bands fusing "Colombian and African rhythms with swirling organs and psychedelic guitars" and setting the neighbourhood picos ablaze. The music on this album is bold and visionary, but also light-hearted and inquisitive to charming effect–ready to take you for a spin.
