Los Angeles-based Now Again Records recently released the first volume of its ambitious investigation into the Nigerian rock scene of the 1970s, a two-album/two-book project entitled "Wake Up You! The Rise And Fall of Nigerian Rock, 1972-1977" and authored by music producer/historian Uchenna Ikonne.
In an interview with NPR radio Ikonne proceeds to offer some background insight, including the role of the notorious Fela Kuti in the short-lived movement.
"When rock 'n' roll first came about, it seemed kind of ridiculous to most people. It seemed like these young Africans were awkwardly aping foreign artists, who were White, who were themselves copying Black Americans."

We are most definitely hooked on those Ethiopian grooves, so when an article appeared on Okayafrica a few days ago, we answered the call and were rewarded with a fine read, providing insight to an invaluable piece of musical history on "How Armenian Genocide Orphans Sparked A Revolution In Ethiopian Music".
A few years ago, Armenian-American director Aramazt Kalayjian launched a Kickstarter campaign to crowdfund a documentary retracing the roots of Armenians [...]
Right on time for the weekend, passionate music lover, record collector and DJ John Fitzgerald, aka DJ Fitz, delivers a mind-blowing selection of "Middle East & Maghreb Disco Funk from the Golden Era (1975-1985)", which you can hear in the SoundCloud player above or via Mixcloud. The mix presented via David Byrne Radio "features a few very rare 7”s he found (under a fishbowl!) during his first visit to Turkey in 2006, and others he's come across since [...]

Time for your daily dose of pseudonyms: If you're a fan of the notorious Karl Hector & the Malcouns (Karl Hector being the German producer and guitarist JJ Whitefield, aka Jan Weissenfeldt), then this one should be right up your alley. Sad news from Turkey these days and most recently from Istanbul, our home away from home. As we think of our friends and the people we love around the globe and as we watch Kutiman's latest installment of "Mix The City", we ask ourselves, could it not actually be this 'easy'? Look around the world, beautiful people everywhere producing a multitude of sounds, diverse echos and patterns, resonating within and reminding us that life is the only true [...]
After delivering a jawdropping mix of vinyl rarities from Beautiful Egypt back in January, Belgium's token purveyors of 'global eclectic supersounds' return to the 1's and 2's to spotlight a festive selection of Turkish tunes from the 60s-80s. Just to be clear, this is not your average pseudo-nostalgic, folkloric post-colonialist , Western-centric compilation of supposedly exotic sounds. Instead, Radio Martiko line up a host of tracks straight from the [...]
Live as can be! When we heard that Boom Pam had scheduled an instrumental live performance with some of their close musical friends at Tel Aviv's Merkaz Enav auditorium we teamed up with the local Snifff Productions crew and fairplanet.org to bring you an exclusive live stream of the concert via Greedio, our streaming platform currently in the making.
To be honest, even while preparing to go live, we did not quite know, what to expect. But once this marvelous [...]
A few weeks back we received a promotional copy of Daniel Haaksman's second artist album "African Fabrics", which officially released two weeks ago. Besides the vibrant blend of African sounds with bass music styles from the Northern hemisphere, we were also intrigued by the story behind the album title itself; so-called African fabrics, perceived as being of African heritage, whereas actually they are a colonial byproduct, originally imported by the Dutch by [...]
