Remember that team of dedicated researchers, staff and students of the University of Central Lancashire on a worldwide mission "committed to mapping the sonic landscapes of unique geographic locations”, alias the Global Sound Movement? Remember their recent expedition to Uganda, where they compiled the “Unique Sounds of Uganda” pack of samples and field recordings, totalling over 240 high-resolution loops and 2 GB of rare, royalty-free material for producers and sound lovers alike? Remember Christmas?
That’s what we thought. In any case the Global Sound Movement team, in collaboration with Conflux Productions, has now recreated 5 classic Christmas jingles with an audible African twist, i.e. “Jingle Bells”, “Away In A Manger”, “Deck The Halls”, “Joy To The World” and “Silent Night”, using sounds from the Ugandan sample pack, or as they put it, “reimagined with the spirit of the Pearl of Africa”.
Oh and by the way, if you feel inclined to do so, you may also finally purchase the “Unique Sounds of Uganda” sample pack at a discounted holiday price. The Christmassy add-on is available for free over here. Also listen to BBC Radio 4 special on the initiative itself.
