In case you were wondering where to find the most far-reaching selections on the web, we hereby invite you to check out our Greedio channel on Mixcloud for extraordinary music from around the globe. There you will find an ongoing number of Globalwize radio shows presented by WeltBeat host and selector Jean Trouillet. More recently, Jean has been incorporating 'African Presence' specials into his regular broadcasts on Frankfurt community radio X. For instance, show #426 featured Dr. Hauke Dorsch, director of the African Music Archive (AMA) at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, while show #428 was hosted by Kathrin Thomas, undergraduate student of Ethnology at the University of Mainz, who shared an enthusiastic introduction to the flourishing Afrobeats genre.
Today, we return with #430 and yet another 'African Presence' special. This one sees the AMA's director Hauke Dorsch and PhD student Tom Simmert introduce Nonku Phiri from South Africa and Sharon Onyango-Obbo from Uganda/Kenya. Nonku Phiri is a vocal artist with a wide range of artistic skills and an impressive catalogue of releases and live performances around the globe. Sharon Onyango-Obbo is a music producer, audio engineer, DJ and creative consultant who is currently spearheading the Santuri Electronic Music Acadamy in Nairobi. The two are part of this year's 'artists in residence' program at the African Music Archives and for this show explore their previous releases, while also showcasing their re-imaginations of music retrieved from the AMA's extensive archival collections.
