15/02/2016A World Radio Day Special Broadcast With Author Ilija Trojanow

According to the UNESCO, radio to this day "remains the medium that reaches the widest audience worldwide, in the quickest possible time". That being said, February 13th marked the official World Radio Day, a day to celebrate the medium's unique role as well as its longlasting form and function as well as to promote the work of independent broadcasters in securing "international access to information and freedom of expression".

To mark the occasion, Greedy's very own Weltbeat and Globalwize initiator Jean Trouillet hosted a 2-hour World Radio Day broadcast on Frankfurt's radio X. Initially a pirate radio station radio X has been on air for 19 years and counting, a community radio for Frankfurt and the greater Frankfurt area, also available online.

Welcoming special guest Ilija Trojanow to the studio, an acclaimed German writer of Bulgarian descent and professed music nerd, the far-reaching musical mix included tracks by the likes of Den Sorte Skole, Raphaël Imbert, Baaba Maal, Daniel Haaksman and more, including an original cassette from Senegal dating back to 1984. Luckily there is a playlist to go along with this engaging session that made us realize, how many amazing cross-cultural collaborations are out there and just how much we love listening to the radio!

‘Weltbeat’ is on every Wednesday from 7pm-9pm CET with ‘Globalbeat’ airing every second Wednesday of the month. Feel free to tune in to the 2016 World Radio Day special via the player above.
