The Globalwize 'African Presence' specials, in collaboration with the Institute of Ethnology and African Studies (ifeas) at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz and the African Music Archives (AMA), have been steadily accumulating here on greedio and luckily so. Following the previous special presentation of 'African American Political Songs' selected by Kathrin Thomas, we return with the latest instalment featuring WeltBeat host/selector Jean Trouillet and Dr. Hauke Dorsch – director of the aforementioned archives – alongside their special guest Jürgen Leinhos, founder of the project "Kultur im Ghetto" (est. 1984). Leinhos joins Hauke Dorsch and Jean Trouillet to talk about the "Jazz gegen Apartheid" ('jazz against apartheid') project/performance series and its quasi initiator, the late and legendary South African jazz double bassist Johnny Dyani (key member of South Africa's first integrated jazz band The Blue Notes).
Dyani had fled his native South Africa in 1964 as a teenager, eventually relocated to Copenhagen, Denmark, and later Sweden, recorded numerous albums and played with internationally renowned contemporaries such as Chris McGregor, Dollar Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim), Don Cherry, Steve Lacy, David Murray, Mongezi Feza & Okay Temiz (Xaba) and many more, before his sudden passing in 1986 at the age of only 41 after a performance in West Berlin. He was a key figure of the anti-apartheid movement and member of the South African diaspora, who lived in exile and ultimately chronicled the movement in his artistic work, a powerful musical voice from abroad. In the "Globalwize Radioshow #461", Hauke Dorsch interviews Jürgen Leinhos to find out more about Johnny Dyani and the forthcoming "Jazz gegen Apartheid" concert series while Trouillet provides musical listening treats for added context.
