Globalwize Radioshow #457
July marked the passing of the undisputed master and arguably the greatest kora player of our time, Mali's Toumani Diabaté, at age 58. On this sad occasion, WeltBeat host and selector Jean Trouillet and the director of the African Music Archives at the University of Mainz, Hauke Dorsch, got together to record a special tribute show in honour of Diabaté's prolific and virtuosic body of work, bringing ancient griot traditions to life. Dorsch also published a personal obituary via The Conversation, which you can read here, if you know French.
The "Globalwize Radioshow #457" shares a two-hour selection of Diabaté's unparalleled playing as well as choice collaborations with other masters of their craft. This fills an unfortunate gap, seeing as no major German media outlet picked up on Diabaté's death nor on his life's work, which to us, seems blasphemous to say the least. As such, this show is an attempt to do right by Diabaté's extensive oeuvre and invaluable contribution to Mandé culture, but also to possibly introduce a new generation of listeners or those less familiar with his playing to his undeniable and borderline magical musicianship.
In this show you will hear Trouillet and Dorsch dropping knowledge and sharing anecdotes in German, while presenting some of their personal favourite productions from Diabaté's vast discography. Among the artists included you will find names such as Kelitigui Diabaté, Basekou Kouyaté, Sidike Diabaté, Djelimadi Sissoko, Danny Thompson, José Soto, Diabaté's Symmetric Orchestra, Hans Lüdemann, Taj Mahal, Ali Farka Touré, Youssou N'Dour, Jarabi and Mamadou Manda Keita.
