Hot on the heels of last week's "Globalwize Radioshow #449", an 'African Presence' special introduction to the music of Tanzania with guest host Prof. Dr. Imani Sanga, we return with yet another 'African Presence' special feature from WeltBeat host and selector Jean Trouillet. This time around, the "Globalwize Radioshow #452" brings us an introduction to Nigerian Fújì music – a popular Yoruba musical genre originating from the streets and championed primarily by formally untrained musicians – presented by special guest Dr. Oladele Ayorinde, and now streaming exclusively on greedio via Mixcloud.

Ayorinde is a musician, music scholar and arts and culture economist in both academic and professional spheres and has held teaching and research positions at five universities across Africa, Europe and North America. He is currently a visiting scholar at the Goethe University in Frankfurt, in cooperation with the Stellenbosch University in Cape Town and the Mountain Top University in Pakuro, Nigeria. His research on the Nigerian popular music industry in Lagos has not only enhanced academic knowledge, but also helped develop a practical framework to map the value of informal economies such as the live and recorded music sectors, festivals and heritage sectors across cities in Nigeria and other African countries, designed to inform policy and economic development strategies in contemporary Africa.

In this Globalwize 'African Presence' special, Dr. Oladele Ayorinde shares an in-depth introduction to Nigerian Fújì music, ranging from the early 1940s all the way to today's burgeoning Afrobeats scene led by Nigerian global superstars the likes of Wizkid and Burna Boy, most of whom emerged from the Fújì scene. Besides providing added context and background infos, Ayorinde has selected Fújì and Fújì-inspired music by Nigerian artists the likes of Abibu Oluwa, Yusuf Olatunji, Sanusi Aka (S. Aka), Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, Wasiu Ayinde Anifowose (Kwam 1), General Kollington Ayinla, Adewale Ayuba, Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, Sunny T Adesokan, Iyabo Osanle, The Remedies, Jazzman Olofin, 9ice, Wizkid, Olamide, Burna Boy and Asake. You can now stream the full show via the player below or simply head to our greedio channel on Mixcloud for that and more quality audio content. Enjoy!
